This is the story of cyclist Joe Parkin's time as a Professional in the late 80's. I feel anyone who wants to become a professional athlete in a fringe sport should probably read this. Right after high school he picks up and flies across the country to the Flemish region in Belgium to try to make it as a professional. He covers almost everything about the sport: teams, coaches, hotels, races, travel, and even the drugs. If you love cycling, great read. If you don't love cycling think of this book as the story of a minor league baseball player bouncing around rookie league to the majors and back again. At points he is living in the attic of a family who lives above the diner they own. While other times he is getting ready for major stage races and even some of the great one day classics in nice hotels while giving autographs. The Reading Rainbow referrence is because when I think of talking about books that is what always comes to mind. That damn flying butterfly across the sky song.
By far this song was cool. Yet one of the greatest champions of destroing the hatred for reading that was rampant throughout grades K through 5th was surely RUN DMC
